New wallet -scam

A while ago I came across a friend, let's call him Ray, who had just paid 0€ for a brand new wallet. He told 
me there's a simple trick to get the department store staff to hand you one, without you ever needing to smuggle it 
past the alarms. All you need is an expired credit card or other card with a name that matches your ID. Ray then 
explained me how he simply had picked the nicest wallet on the shelf, put his old credit card and some receipts inside, 
and then handed it over to an employee to whom Ray told he had "found it at the gardening department". Ray then left the 
store and waited for a while, before going to the info desk asking if they've found a wallet with his credit card 
inside. They of course had, and the little trick had earned Ray a nice piece of designer leather.
